Title: Why We Broke Up
Author: Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket for those of you who have read my previous recs)
First Published: 2011
Genre: Young Adult | Romance | Chick Lit
About the Book:
Minerva Green wants Ed Slaterton to understand why they broke up so she writes him a letter and gives him a box containing objects she acquired over the course of their short but intimate relationship.
A folded note, two bottle caps, a box of matches, a movie ticket, rose petals, a toy truck and various other things.
Every item has its story, its illustration and will be dumped sooner or later.
“I’m telling you why we broke up, Ed. I’m writing this letter, the whole truth of why it happened. And the truth is that I goddamn loved you so much.”
Why we broke up describes the prime example for first love and a painful breakup because girl and boy realise they’re wrong for each other.
He is the classic high school douchebag and she is an artsy, movie-worshipping aspiring director with frizzy hair. It’s made clear throughout the book that the people surrounding them don’t see why they are together in the first place. However as each item is revealed you will be absorbed into the relationship of two people who couldn’t be more different but had a relationship sparking and burning with passion.
You will notice that the way the book is built is very unusual for a young adult romance to begin with. Some might even find it difficult to get into but it’s definitely worth a try. You won’t be disappointed.
